Two hotels that are based in Ballarat have already applied to increase the number of pokies they have in their bars. The Victorian Commission for Gambling will decide whether they will take the pokie machines or not. The first hotel is based in Lydiard Street South and have asked for 8 more machines and the second hotel is based in Doveton Street north and wants 10 extra machines. Both hotels need the machines to support their funding of their planned renovations. However, members of the city council have already expressed their concerns regarding the applications as they believe that there is already a big number of pokie machines in the city and some parts of the society can be seriously damaged. Another argument is that both hotels are based on areas with already socio-economic issues and thing can only get worse if gambling opportunities are increased. The truth is that already there is a very big issue with gambling in these areas and it is normal that a big concern exists for the increase of the machines. The official figures show that there are around 645 machines spread in the pubs and bars of Ballarat which is a relatively high number if we consider the size of the city. The cost of the application was set to $50,000 in order to keep future applicants away which means that the cost of the license is significant for any pub or hotel. More will come on this subject in the following weeks, so stay tuned and we will let you know what will happen.
